Who might benefit from this service
While occasional memory lapses are common, persistent memory loss, confusion, or subtle changes in personality may indicate a deeper concern. Often, these shifts are first noticed by family or friends who are close to you, rather than yourself. An accurate and early diagnosis of dementia is essential. It helps individuals access the appropriate treatment, support, and guidance, enabling them to maintain their independence and well-being for as long as possible.
This service is designed for:
- Individuals experiencing ongoing memory issues
- Those with suspected dementia
- Anyone looking to better understand cognitive decline or changes in thinking
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes. We encourage you to bring a family member, friend, or carer. They can provide useful insights and support during your visit.
What if I am diagnosed with dementia?
If dementia is diagnosed:
- We will explain the type and what it means
- You will be offered treatment options, where appropriate
- We'll support you and your family with care planning, advice, and referrals to local services
Our service aims to support you and your family throughout your dementia journey
Can memory problems get better?
Some causes of memory problems are treatable or reversible. Others, like dementia, are progressive but can be managed with the right support and strategies.
Will I have to stop driving?
Not always, but if a diagnosis like dementia is made, we are legally required to inform the DVLA. They will review your case and decide whether you can continue driving.
How long will it take to receive my assessment results?
In most cases, where an assessment has been conducted by both our clincian and registered nurse, it is possible to reach a diagnostic conclusion by the end of the consultation. There may be instances, however, where additional investigations or specialist input from other disciplines—such as neurology or psychiatry—are required to inform the diagnosis. In such cases, we will guide and support you throughout the process to ensure you receive the care you need.
Is dementia hereditary?
Some types of dementia have a genetic component, but most cases are not directly inherited. We can discuss your family history and any concerns during your assessment.
What support is available after the memory assessment?
In addition to providing you with ongoing support, we can also connect you to:
- Local dementia support services
- Carer support groups
- Occupational therapy or memory strategies
- Social services and financial advice
How accurate are the memory assessment tests?
Cognitive tests are reliable tools, but they are just one part of the picture. We use a combination of test results, medical history, and other investigations to make a thorough and careful diagnosis.
